Summer 2024
digital fabrication
I was inspired by James Nolan Gandy to experiment with mechanical drawing contraptions. In the past, I have made robotic arms and CNC machines draw by supplying them with g-code that is generated from some sort of source line art (like from Grasshopper, for example). For this project, however, I wanted to be less perscriptive with the line art process.
This machine uses 5 stepper motors to control two arms and a rotary table. The table holds a piece of paper and the two arms control the movement of a drawing implement. The only inputs I have to the machine to influence the type of drawing that is made is (1) The lengths of the arms and (2) The ratios that the various stepper motors spin relative to eachother. What results is a captivating process to watch. More info coming soon.
A semi-mechanical drawing contraption made out of 3D printed parts, similar to the machine made by James Nolan Gandy.
