Project Overview

For this project, we were asked to develop three buildings on an existing site, Norwood Estate Park. This piece of land is located in Austin, Texas south of Ladybird lake at the corner of I-35 and Riverside Drive.

Our program for this project was to design three structures for the existing park that exemplify the prosaic and numinous. I decided to turn the existing site into a space that serves the local community. First, I designed a twisting observation tower situated in the lake itself. The tower is twisted to give the observation platform a direct view of downtown Austin. Second, I used the scenic hilltop as a public pool that overhangs off the cliffside. Finally, I turned the existing dog park into an outdoor theatre and concert pavilion with a sun shade.

CNC Site Model

The following images were made through a technique outlined in this paper. I started with a photo-realistic render of my site made quickly in the Twinmotion rendering software. Next, I used copic markers to make a version of these renders by hand. Finally, I used software to apply the “style” of the copic marker drawings to the “content” of the renders. The result is an artistic render of the site in my own style, but of a quality and clarity that far exceeds what I am able to do on my own.

Building Elevation and Section

The observation tower was designed in grasshopper to allow for the creation of the dynamic panel facade. The pattern is tightest around the staircase. In addition, the pattern starts off less porous near the bottom and becomes more open in the top. I designed the tower this way to give people who are walking up the stairs a small taste of the beautiful view that awaits them at the top without spoiling it altogether.

Site Plan

The following site plan shows the three main elements of the proposed site – the tower, pool, and theater. It is a hybrid drawing, with the linework done by hand and the coloring done in Photoshop.
